Change is Possible — Better Lawyer Business Development Habits

For all of us – change can be hard. And it seems the busier we are, the harder it is to start a new behavior and stick with it.

Or to muster enough motivation to get going on a few new articles, or speeches, or putting together a webinar or CLE to get in front of clients and prospects.

Well the good news is, it may not be about motivation after all.  Dr. B.J. Fogg of the Stanford Persuasive Tech Lab says:

  1. Forget about motivation — just make the new behavior easier to do. TRY: Friday coffee date alone to map out new prospect calls for next week.
  2. Don’t go for huge strides, your better goal is to strive for “tiny successes, one after the other.”  TRY: Check in with 2 clients every Tuesday.

Until now, many lawyers felt there was no reason to jump on the “video craze”  — believing that in house lawyers and business folks don’t watch video for business information.

News flash — 66% of executives 50 or older watch video on business sites at least weekly.  15% of those execs watch video daily on business-related websites.

Miami Heat GC– How Women Lawyers Can Excel in Male Dominated Fields

Miami Heat General Counsel Raquel Libman spoke to over 100 women lawyers at NAWL’s Mid-year meeting in an Oprah-style interview with Marsha Redmon.  Libman spoke about how women can succeed in a male-dominated business like basketball and how she came to be the GC of the Heat.  Libman said she has found that keeping an even tone of voice and a sense of humor is often helpful.

The National Association of Women Lawyers meeting was held in Miami at the Epic Hotel.

As in law firms…American women’s pay continues to lag behind men

Today is the first day of  Women’s History Month – and the White House just released the first comprehensive federal study on the status of American women since 1963.

Not surprisingly, the same trends we see in the legal profession are seen here.

The news is not good when it comes to salary – women continue to lag behind men at every level.

While at the same time, women have surpassed men in education.
